Tsumori Chisato

Born: Saitama, Japan

Biography: She studied Fashion at Bunka Fashion School in Tokyo. She started working with Issey Miyake, after gaining some recognition she created her own collection under the name I.S. Chisato Tsumori Design in 1990. Her project soon became famous in and outside Japan connecting young people sharing an interest in colourful, unique clothing.

Relation to my work: Chisato's clothes are colourful, fresh and modern, but at the same time she makes it enjoyable to wear her brand. Her pieces are a great addition to an everyday wardrobe and can be subtle, at the same time creating a beautiful outfit, that could be worn by celebrities. It is inspiring how Tsumori connects different pattern, not only stripes and dots but also, oriental, simple, comic and even realistic (like a photo of apples) designs. I would like to create something wearable, but also original and interesting at the same time, so it is a perfect designer I can use as an inspiration. The other aspect that could be useful in my work is the way the clothes are photographed and presented, I love the connection between the models, outfits and background as it creates a full picture of the collection.
