Glossary Of Terms
In last week's session, I had to research terms that are related to my progression route (Fashion Communication and Styling) and create a glossary of them to make it easier for me to be more professional in describing different elements of my process. I will be adding to that list as I will progress with my project.
Androgynous
Usually used when referring to people wearing clothes, not typically associated with their gender, ex. men in skirts.
Apparel
Another way to describe clothing
Applique
Different shapes of cut fabric sewn onto the larger piece in order to make it visually more appealing
Argyle
'scotch pattern' - diamond shapes usually used on sweaters
Armscye
Armhole
Ascot Collar
Tall collar
Bandeau
Alternative to a classic bra, a fabric without straps
Batwing
A big sleeve connecting the waist with the shoulder
Bias
A cut that follows the shape of a body
Body
The tight fit of the clothing (bodysuit, etc)
Chine/Warp Print
Method of making a fabric - connecting weaving and printing in the process of making
Drape
The way a piece of clothing is hanging (like curtains)
Ensemble
Clothing with the accessories - the whole look
Empire Waist
High waistline, just below the bust
Epaulettes
Ornament on the shoulder, in the past, was used to present a military rank
Flounce
Adding more fabric underneath the clothing to make it longer and exaggerate the silhouette
Fit and Flare
A close fit of a dress with a skirt part getting wider
Fluted
Long sleeves with wider ends
Garment
A piece of clothing
Garter
A loop of fabric, worn around the thighs to hold the stockings
Godet Pleat
Method of creating a skirt - adding triangles at the lower part, to make it fold better and to make it more flowy and dynamic
Haute Couture
Exclusive creations in fashion
Hemline
The lower edge of the clothing. Depending on the level of the Hemline it will either reveal or hide the legs.
Hemming
Folding and sewing down a piece of material to hide rough edges and create a more professional look
Inseam
The length from the crotch to the hemline of trousers (seam)
Jabot
Fabric added at the top part of the shirt to (mostly ruffles) as a decoration
Kimono
Japanese type of clothing, resembling a coat
Kilt
Scottish type of a skirt ussually plaided
Look Book
Showing ideas for styling the clothing along with the accessories
Maxi Skirt/Dress
Long skirt/dress
Markup
The difference between creation and selling costs
Opaque
Transparent Fabric
Reversible
Possibility to wear a garment inside out
Sweetheart Neckline
A neckline that resembles a top part of the heart
Silhouette
A shape of the clothing -straight, A-line, etc.
Vent
A hole in the piece of clothing that alows air to flow
