Odilon Redon (Bertrand-Jean Redon)
1840-1916
He was a French painter and printmaker with almost 200 artworks in his legacy. Redon was associated with Symbolism. He began his journey with art when he was a child, but started studying towards his passion at the age of 15, later changed the course for Architecture. His pieces were usually presenting unrealistic themes or death-related subjects. Although his sensitivity and creativity let people find his work fascinating and beautiful. Sometimes as his inspiration he was using other creators, such as the writer Edgar Allan Poe.
I really like the painting "Portrait of Violette Heymann". It is because of the connection between realism and fantasy. The woman herself looks beautiful and realistic, although the flowers and abstract shapes make the whole piece more unsettling. I after seeing it had a question, "Are the flowers covering someone or something?". In my opinion, this painting looks similar to bleached photographs from analog cameras, that once dipped in the substance, create beautiful, original pieces.
I can see myself using Redon as my inspiration in one of my projects, because of his unusual color palette and sense of reality. The fantastic and mysterious themes are something that suits many of my projects, therefore I can use them in the future.
